Summary

This is a continuation of blog post Test drive Microsoft Intune – Part 1 Setup Trial Environment. The purpose of this blog article is for guide someone on how to deploy an application on a Window 10 PC using Microsoft Intune.

Deploying an application with file extension .exe

Since we are using a demo account of Intune it has been pre-configured by Microsoft. We can now do customization and application deployment.
Let’s begin by clicking on Apps the left hand navigation and then clicking on the Add Apps

You will be asked to save and run a file named setup.exe. Download and save the file to your preferred location and Install the file.
Click to Run Microsoft Intune Software Publisher application in your PC.

Now Download will start

You will be asked to sign is using your Office 365 admin account from blog part 1. Image below is just an example.

Select Add Software and click Next

Click Next to proceed…

For this example I’ll be using notepad ++ installer file to deploy on my Windows 10 PC. Click Next button to proceed…

Enter Application Publisher, Name, and Description of Notepad ++. Items with * are mandatory. Click Next to proceed…

Under architecture please select 64-bit since I am using Windows 10 x64 PC. For OS choose Any and click Next to proceed…

Select Default Detection Rules and click Next to proceed…

Select Yes and provide command line arguments. Since we are installing notepad ++ we need use /S, so the full Command line argument will be npp.6.9.2.Installer.exe  /S

Leave the screen as default example below and click Next to proceed…

Review the summary and click Upload to proceed.

Application has been created and uploaded to Intune. Click Close.

Now let’s create a test user account. Go to Groups on the left hand side and then click Add Users on the right hand side.

Fill in the First name, Last name, Display name & User name and click Next

Note: this is adding license for Enterprise Mobility Suite which include Intune to the user.

Check on send email and provide your email address and click Create

On the summary screen click OK. Sample below.

Go to Groups and click Create
Group and enter the Group
name you want. On the left hand side pick All Users which will select Associate your group to All Users Group (Parent Group) and click on Next to proceed…

On Criteria Membership page click on Next to proceed…

One the left hand side we need to select a User, click Add and then they will appear on the right hand side

On the Summary, review then click Finish.

Click on Group and then click on My Test Group or whatever you named it above on the previous step.

Now let’s install Intune client software on my Windows 10 test machine.

Log in to your test machine and log in to Microsoft Intune Portal. Go to ADMIN, click on the Client Software Download and in step two click on Download Client Software. Once completed extract Microsoft_Intune_Setup.zip files to a preferred location on ex. C:\temp\ and Run Microsoft_Intune_Setup.exe file.

To validate and show that Microsoft Intune is installed. Click on the Start Menu Icon and in the Search Box type Microsoft Intune Center. Select Microsoft Intune Center which will load the following screen.

Back in the Microsoft Intune Portal on your management machine

Now let’s deploy the Notepad++ application via Intune management console. Go to APPS and Click APPS and select Notepad ++ to highlight. Right Click on Notepad ++ and select Manage Deployment

Select Groups and Click My Test
Group. Click on Add to move it to the right hand side and then click Next

On Deployment Action page select Available Install on deployment state and then click Finish.

Go back to the test machine

Now I’ll check my Windows 10 PC to see if Notepad ++ is now available on my Microsoft Intune Center. Click on Get application from the Company Porta link.

Log in using Test User. Image for reference only this will vary on your trial account.

Oppsss…I forgot something. “The Device is not yet enrolled via Intune Management Portal”

Enroll my Windows 10 PC by performing the following. Click on Windows Start icon and type Settings. Then select Accounts, then click on Your email and accounts, then click on Add a work or school account link.

Log in using testuser@MODxxxxxx.onmicrosoft.com

Looks promising…

Hooray…

Now let’s go Microsoft Intune Center and click on get all applications from Company Portal

Sign in using test user account.

On successful log in you will see information about your device via Intune Company Portal. Click on Company Name or your user ID name.

And behold notepad is now ready to be installed on my Windows 10 PC.

Click on npp.6.9.2.Installer exe to Install Notepad ++ Application. You will see a Window 10 notification once Notepad ++ has been installed successfully.

Conclusion:

  2. We’ve learned how to use Intune to manage a Windows 10 PC and deploy Notepad ++ on a managed device.

Important Note

  • Do not forget to cancel your Intune trial account when your trial period expires. You will start getting billed for any usage.
